How to Become a Real Estate Agent in Nigeria

One of the best things about the Real Estate Sector is that in uncertain economic times, it remains immune, including during a recession. This is because there will always be individuals looking for properties and the value of these properties remain unaffected.
For this reason, venturing into Real Estate Agency is a great decision with lots of potential as long as you put in the work and take the right steps. As a real agent, your job entails guiding individuals or brokers through the entire property acquisition process.
If you’re wondering where to begin, here is a head start:
Steps to Becoming a Real Estate Agent

1. Start By Learning

You cannot venture into an industry if you do not know the ins and the outs of the industry. So, you can try meeting up with and asking questions to other real estate agents or individuals who are in the real estate sector. You can also purchase books or take professional courses, read up on the relationship between the economy of Nigeria and the real estate market, the big dogs in the industry, the amount of capital required, the risk levels and laws guiding real estate operations. You should aim to be widely read and knowledgeable as a real estate agent.
If you plan to get professional training, you will find real estate academies in Lagos state with programmes and certificates. Online courses will also do. You will get to meet other agents and professionals in these academies and find lots of opportunities too.

2. Prepare Your Business Plan

It’s okay if you do not know how to craft a professional looking business plan, you won’t need to, although you can learn to if you want.
However, you will need to set goals and make plans that will help achieve your goal. You just need a simple business plan detailing your goals, and what steps will help meet your targets, what milestones to aim for and how to get to them.
You can always amend your plans but penning something down gives you a clear idea what you’re going for and how you’re getting there.

3. Have Your Agency Registered

Sometimes Nigerians are wary of people who call themselves Real Estate Agents because they turn out to be fraudsters. In order to be taken seriously, you will need to register your business, especially if you have gotten a license. All business registrations happen under The Corporate Affairs Commission. It would also be worthwhile to register under some real estate agencies and associations; an example is Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN).

4. Work on Becoming Well-Known

You are in business to sell, but if no one knows about your business, then the purpose is defeated. So, you should work on your online presence and advertising. Aggressively promote your brand, offline and online.

5. Get an Office Space

Apart from how professional you present with an office space, you also become trustworthy with an office space, because clients know they can always drop by and find you physically, in addition to establishing work phone numbers, emails, and social media links. Of course, as you grow, you will then need to set up a proper team to help you out.
